Why Am I Catholic?

With Easter already here I thought it appropriate to repost this video titled, "Why am I Catholic". It's a montage of images, quotes, and icon's of our beautiful Catholic faith. Touching on the aspects of our faith that Jesus Christ bestowed upon us to live as Christians. It is a simple video made by Katerina Marie yet it is simply brilliant viewing. I know you all will enjoy it. The video was made by fellow Houstonian Katerina Marie of Evangelical Catholicism. For Evangelical Catholicism's original posting click here. Shamrock Day?

We've seen the liberals and secularists start turning Merry Christmas into Happy Holiday and now we have those Taliban-producing America-hating Northern Californians turning St. Patrick's Day into Shamrock Day. Handmaiden sent me the following email of a correspondence between a friend of her's from California and the local children's museum in Berkley, California. Here is the local children's museum response: "Thank you for your thoughtful questions about our upcoming Shamrock Day event. Our goal is to bring cultural diversity to our audience without broaching religious boundaries." "A number of modern day celebrations have their origins in religious holidays, but have become broadly celebrated by everyone. Halloween and Mardi Gras are prime examples, and to a large extent, so is St. Patrick's Day, though certainly for many Catholics it is a true holiday (holy day) with religious significance." "What we have tried to do at Habitot is focus on the non-religious elements of prominent celebrations with broad cultural meaning that everyone can learn from and appreciate, and avoid all particularly religious holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter or Ramadan as well as references to the religious origins of holidays. Norooz is a spring festival, not a religious one, for example." "I think you and your family will enjoy the Irish-inspired activities we have planned for Sharmrock Day. Celtic music will be played, Leprechauns and pots of gold will abound, green will be everywhere, and these elements can help children learn about Irish culture which is our main intent, and the reason the event is named Shamrock Day and not St. Patrick's Day." "That said, we are well aware that we need community voices like yours to advise us in our efforts to appropriately reflect diverse cultures in non-stereotypic ways, and to tell us when we haven't gotten it right!" "I'd like to invite you to join our *"Community Connections" *advisory..." etc. Here is the informational blurb about Shamrock Day: Shamrock Day The Shamrock Ceilidh Band will perform traditional Irish folk music from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at Habitot Children's Museum's Shamrock Day celebration. There will be a hunt for hidden "gold" throughout the museum from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. In the museum's Art Studio, children can create and decorate their own green-lens glasses and print Shamrock Day cards with carved potatoes and other fun materials. Shamrock cookies and green punch will be provided at 3:00 pm. Saturday, March 17, 2007; 10:00 - 5:00 pm This FREE Admission Day is generously sponsored by Union Bank.

I had to Google Norooz to find out what it was so for more information about this Persian holiday click here.

Today's Role Models: Tara Connor

Tara Connor is the reigning Miss USA for 2006 and she was recently implicated in some sexual romps that is, ahem, unbecoming of Miss USA. While Tara Connor seems to be held as a role model in America today, Salon magazine is questioning why we hold her to such high standards. Former Miss USA Kate Shindle, who wrote this Salon article, says
"But is it fair to judge her so harshly for behavior that, when employed by far more famous celebrities, is often rewarded?"
My first thought is why are we holding up a beauty pageant contestant as a role model first of all. I won't even address the question that former Miss USA Kate Shindle brings up because it is a non sequitor. The Salon article is titled "Running low on role models". I personally respectfully disagree. Too many, probably the majority, of Americans are still looking towards role models other than their parents. And even that can be questioned when divorced, remarried, and unnatural (homosexual) marriages bring a lot of problematic issues to children. We as Americans are losing sight of what is important to us. Many hold up sports stars, super-models, you-name-it celebrity when we can already look at the Communion of Saints as worthy of role models. St. Francis of Assisi, St. Augustine of Hippo, and St. Gianna Beretta Molla to name just an iota of a fraction of the Communion of Saints that are available. This country, being 95% Christian, is living off their Judeo-Christian heritage and are not renewing their faith by taking it seriously. My point in singling out Tara Connor is that we should not lose sight of what is important to us and our children. Do we want our children to emulate people who have reached the pinnacle of holiness or do we want our children to emulate people who succumb to the worse of human nature? Quis ut Deus

QVIS VT DEVS is the inscription on the shield carried by the Archangel St. Michael, one of the seven before God. This inscription translated into English roughly says, "Who [is] as God?", or loosely, "Who is like unto God?". St. Michael the Archangel by having this inscription on his shield is saying who would have the audacity to compare himself to God.
His fame comes from defeating Lucifer himself in battle. Along with St. Gabriel and St. Raphael, they are the only three, of the seven before God, that are mentioned by name in the Holy Bible. He is often pictured slaying a dragon that represents Lucifer. Sometimes he holds scales in his free hand which represents bringing those that have left the earth to the judgement of God.
He is the prince of the Seraphs and all the other choirs of angels. He is also my guardian angel and the name of the church that attend. To the right is a stained glass window depicting the shield which he holds with the words Quis ut Deus.

A nicely done video highlighting, for me, some of the many reasons why I am Catholic myself and why I love this gift that our Lord and Savior left for us.
