Wuerl urges U.S. bishops to consult on hot issues - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Concerned about open divisiveness, Bishop Donald Wuerl of Pittsburgh has proposed that his fellow U.S. Catholic bishops consult one another before speaking out on divisive national issues -- particularly whether prominent Catholic politicians who support legal abortion should be denied communion. Though couched in polite, theological language, Wuerl's proposal is an attempt to muffle loose cannons in the hierarchy. The proposal appeared in the Pittsburgh Catholic and was carried nationally through Catholic News Service.

Makes sense. I was confused myself during the election cycle when one bishop would refuse Communion to Kerry and others would allow Communion. At the same time, the more liberal Bishops can silence others by refusing to follow doctrine and collegiality. Maybe if we concentrate on our own areas, ie, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, we can make sure that we take care of our business without worrying about others.
