Anxiety
Last night as the Lenten Discussion group I am involved in were listening to Bishop Fulton Sheen speak about Calvary, the Bishop struck a chord when he mentioned that the therapist, psychiatrist, and psychologist has replace the priest or reverend in society today. Where we go to deal with our ills. Instead of conceding that our sins are the cause of our own ills, we blame a psychiatrict illness such as depression or anxiety.
His words back in the 60's ring ever truer today. We deny our own responsibilities of our own sins and lose the culpability to remedy this. What a little prayer and fasting along with penance will go a long way in reducing and even eliminating our 'perceived' psychological maladies that ails us.
I came across this passage while reading Philippians of St. Paul's message (it's amazing how God works in explaining His mysteries). I want to share this with you all:
Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you. --Philippians 4:6-9

hi...i'm a first-time reader of your blog...I think I saw/heard that same Archbishop Sheen passage while ago about the "replacement" of priests in our day-to-day troubles...I agree, too. Keep up the good writing.
Almost everything that Sheen said way back then is still VERY pertinent today. Corapi reminds me of him in many ways.
Christine P.,
Thanks for the kind comments.
WICatholic,
Now that you mention it, yeah, Fr. Corapi is like Sheen. But Fr. Corapi has his own special charism that differentiates him from Bishop Sheen.
He does, for sure. He is today's Sheen, I think, placed here for this time. Both spoke/speak Truth. Both are powerful figures who are able to gain attention of people and have them PAY ATTENTION to what they say/said.
The difference with Corapi is that he knows the sad/bad side of addiction and the results from first hand experience. That always adds a tremendous plus when one is speaking to those he is trying to reach.
I love Sheen. I did not realize when we listened to him when I was a kid just how good he was. Back then, I only liked the blackboard, and trying to catch his 'Angel' cleaning it... but as I got older and was able to get tapes to hear, or videos of his to watch, I was amazed at the Wisdom....
