Fat Tuesday, Pancakes, and those Easter Eggs

I did a little research on Fat Tuesday and came away with some very interesting and cool facts about this aspect of our faith concerning Fat Tuesday, Lent, Easter Eggs, and much more... Seven Fun Catholic Facts: 1. Why is it called Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday)? Originally during Lent Christians abstained from eating eggs and fat for 40 days (in addition from abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and Friday’s). So leading up to Ash Wednesday Christians would eat all of their stored supplies of eggs & fat so that they wouldn’t spoil as well as to get a last taste before fasting. Hence, ‘Fat Tuesday’. Or in French ‘Mardi Gras’. 2. Why is the time leading up to Lent called ‘Carnival’ in Latin America, southern Europe, and the Spanish and French speaking world? Despite what you may think of the meaning of ‘Carnival’, it is derived from Latin meaning “taking away of flesh” or “carne levare”. Or as it later became, ‘Carnival’. 3. What about here in the United States? Why don’t we celebrate or call it ‘Carnival’? In northern Europe, the United Kingdom, the U.S., parts of Canada, and the rest of the English speaking world it is called ‘Shrovetide’. The English term "shrovetide" (from "to shrive", or hear confessions) is sufficiently explained by a sentence in the Anglo-Saxon "Ecclesiastical Institutes" translated from Theodulphus by Abbot Aelfric about 1000 A.D.: "In the week immediately before Lent everyone shall go to his confessor and confess his deeds and the confessor shall so shrive him as he then my hear by his deeds what he is to do [in the way of penance]". 4. Want to know how or why pancakes were invented? The English custom of eating pancakes was undoubtedly suggested by the need of using up the eggs and fat which were, originally at least, prohibited articles of diet during the forty days of Lent. 5. This brings us to Easter Eggs… The same prohibition (from eggs) is, of course, mainly responsible for the association of eggs with the Easter festival at the other end of Lent. Hence those Easter eggs we like to color and have Easter egg hunts with. 6. Is it really forty days, I counted more than 40 days on the liturgical calendar? Yes. For Catholics it is exactly forty days starting on Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday after you eliminate all the Sundays. Remember, Sunday is a day of rest from work as well as from fasting, but many Christians still like to keep fasting on Sunday. 7. And finally, the final fun fact of the day… …40 days represents a tithe of the year - rounding up, it is a little more than 10% of 365 (or 366!) days for the year. In a special way, we are offering a tithe of our year during this season. (Biretta Tips: New Advent & Per Christum)

Pope Helps in Release of Iranian Hostages

Apparently last Friday Pope Benedict XVI conducted some quiet diplomacy by contacting Iran and requesting as a goodwill gesture before Easter to release. Roughly five days later that request was granted.
On Friday morning, Pope Benedict XVI handed a letter to Iran's ambassador to the Holy See, appealing to Ahmadinejad for a "goodwill gesture before Easter". Mr. Ahmadenijad subsequently released the 15 British sailors as an " Easter gift to the British people". Yesterday, sources in the Middle East insisted privately that the Pope's intervention had been " important " in securing a pre-Easter escape.
According to the April 6th issue of The Independent (London) periodical. In this very same issue in another article The Independent goes on and affirms this,
Pope Benedict XVI added his voice, sending a letter yesterday appealing to Mr. Ahmadinejad for a "goodwill gesture before Easter".
Pope Benedict XVI with some assistance from the Holy Spirit can accomplish almost anything when the love of Christ is involved. ¡Viva el Papa! ¡Viva El Cristo Rey! To read the two articles from The Independent click here and here.

UPDATE: More evidence surfaces of the greater involvement of the Holy See than was previous acknowledged when Pope Benedict XVI appealed to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (#3 anti-Christ) for the release of Britons.

Easter Bunny Spotted in Sumatra

Well, a rare species of rabbit called the Sumatran striped rabbit was caught on film for only the third time in the past 40 some odd years.
"The Sumatran striped rabbit was photographed in late January on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the Wildlife Conservation Society said. The species is listed as critically endangered by the World Conservation Union, due to loss of habitat. The rabbit was previously photographed in 2000, with the last sighting by a scientist back in 1972."

Christianity Rises in the Modern World

A day cannot pass when you come across some sort of news of the decline of Christianity or how irrelevant it is in today's 'world'. Of course we as Christians know that Jesus won't allow this (Mt16:18). But still, our worldly friends and acquaintances smugly snicker at us or behind our backs since we seem to weak to think or stand for ourselves, so we need our Christian faith to support us. Still, this doesn't stop them, the liberals/secularists/homosexuals from doing all they can to wipe out Christianity from public discourse. 40+ years of American liberals controlling our public school system in America in which the Bible was eliminated from study and where failed philosophies of communism, liberalism, and relativism to new philosophies & ideas of environmentalism, homosexuality, and multiculturalism are constantly being force-fed to our children has produced some of the most illiterate Americans relative to the rest of the industrialized world. We even see lapse Catholics attack the faith here in the United States! Liberals love to use the Catholic church as shining examples of proactive public citizens, but then chastise the very same church when they speak out on issues these liberals loath. Over in England you have the secularists and homosexual lobbies wanting to put government controls on religion in order to eliminate Christianity. It's already happening when police interrogate a mother of young boy who wrote 'gay' in an email! Despite the efforts of the political left Christianity seems to not only endure, but to grow and even flourish. Even the infamous Jesus Seminar of forty years back that attempted to deconstruct Jesus has largely been marginalized and discredited because of the Bible being able to sustain attack after attack only to come away even more validated to the point of debunking naysayers. The constant attempt at discrediting the Resurrection of Jesus with false ossuaries, wild-eyed theories of deceit, and most recently the notorious Da Vinci Code has fallen against the witness of Christ and his followers. Of course this brings about the reactionary liberal backlash of frustration, disillusionment, and even more anger and hatred to anything Christian. Though the same can't be said for our Christian brothers in Europe, even there, there seems to be a reawakening of the faith. This reawakening has brought about Chancellor Angela Merkel's lobbying of a greater presence of Christianity in the European Union (EU) where there is none now. This reawakening has even caused a stir in the halls of high liberalism such as the European Parliament in which Pope Benedict XVI has been invited to address them. It just doesn't stop there in Europe, we see the first Christian church being built in the Arabian peninsular country of Qatar in 14 centuries! The very same Arabian peninsula where the Muslims wiped out the last vestiges of Christianity in the 19th century under the current rulers of Saudi Arabia. Even here in the United States Catholics are wanting a greater voice of faith in public discourse. To much chagrin of their fellow secularist/homosexual/liberal Americans. Yes, Christianity is rising in the modern world and this Holy Week is a time of reflection and prayer in thanking God for giving us His only Son in order to redeemed of our sins and to help in spreading of our beautiful Catholic faith.
