Hurricane Ike's Aftermath in Houston
Hurricane Ike swept into Houston early Saturday morning a little after 1:00 am. Before it swept in, I taped up the windows and moved the furniture away from the windows in my home. I called up all of my friends to make sure they were prepared, gassed up the car, and made some last minute shopping for supplies.
That Friday evening I stayed over at a friends home which is approximately three miles from downtown Houston. So yes, we were in the direct path of Hurricane Ike, though not in the mandatory evacuation zones. My friend and I made some gumbo, had a couple of friends over and chatted up the evening until it got dark.
We then stayed up until the power went out at midnight. He crashed to his bed and I fell sound asleep on the couch in the living room.
3:00 am came around when I noticed my buddy was moving restlessly about in the living room looking out the window. I got up and stared out the window and noticed the neighbors tree splintered in two. It was very windy and the rain was everywhere. The whole neighborhood was without power.
It was an awesome display of force outside.
Eventually I moved to the hallway because I wasn't comfortable sleeping underneath the main window of the living room. I slept very well.
8:00 am came around as the neighbor next door was banging the walls of my buddy's home. That was enough to wake me up. I went outside and surveyed the damage. It was still a bit windy and drizzling just a little bit. We saw no significant damage anywhere. Lot's of torn tree branches and some metallic siding sprawling here and there, but nothing that couldn't be cleaned up by the end of the day.
Throughout the day we were texting all of our friends. With the exception of one friend, everyone reported that they made it through the night unscathed. The common denominator amongst all of us was that we had no power. Later we found out that 2.2 million (customers) Houstonians, or 99% of the city was without power.
After munching on a snack I went against the city advisory of driving around. I first returned to my home, put all the furniture back, and took off the tape from the windows. Then I visited all of my friends to see if they needed any assistance.
What I noticed as I was driving up and down the side streets of Houston were neighbor helping neighbor cleaning up the streets. Clearing the gutters of debris and chopping down half splintered trees. The most severe damage I saw was a van nearly crumpled into a ball by a fallen tree.
The news reports thus far have not reported any fatalities, but we were aware of the not so smart residents of Galveston that stayed behind. They were told of a mandatory evacuation at least 48 hours prior to Hurricane Ike hitting the island and surrounding Texas mainland coast. Even up until the power went out my buddy and I watched in disbelief as many Galveston residents were hamming it up for the television crews on the local news programs.
24 hours prior to landfall the waters were noticeably rising and still many residents, up to 40 % of Galveston residents, made a clear and conscious decision to remain at home.
I'm a Christian so this is difficult for me to say but that is a very foolish decision to make. To stay behind after the mayor tells you to leave. Even when the birds and land animals begin moving en mass further inland with rising waters 24 hours before landfall, you have got to be nuts for not moving out of Galveston prior to Hurricane Ike hitting.
Yes, they have their free will and own mind to decide to remain behind. But what about the lives of local, state, and federal emergency crews that risk their own lives to come in and save these foolish and obtuse residents of Galveston.
It is simply mind boggling.
None of my friends are with power and only one local news station, 740 AM, is broadcasting.
So far all I have heard is that many buildings in downtown Houston and the medical center near Rice are fully functioning and operational with electrical power.
The day was coming quickly to an end as my friends and I were sharing stories and cleaning up the yards of tree branches and other debris.
I decided to drive down to Corpus Christi to spend a day or two before returning back to Houston. That is why I am able to post tonight, I am in my friends home here in Corpus Christi, Texas (a four hour drive south of Houston). I am also breaking my month long silence to submit this special blog posting and will return to abstaining from blogging for the remainder of the month of September.
Please keep the residents, emergency workers, volunteers, and others that are in Houston and Galveston in your prayers as we begin cleaning up this great American city.

Planned Parenthood's Racism
The Advocate released a transcript of a conversation between an actor presuming to be a racist and wanting to make a donation, and a woman identified as Autumn Kersey, vice president of marketing for Planned Parenthood of Idaho.
Actor: I want to specify that abortion to help a minority group, would that be possible?
Planned Parenthood: Absolutely.
Actor: Like the black community for example?
Planned Parenthood: Certainly.
Actor: The abortion – I can give money specifically for a black baby, that would be the purpose?
Planned Parenthood: Absolutely. If you wanted to designate that your gift be used to help an African-American woman in need, then we would certainly make sure that the gift was earmarked for that purpose.
Actor: Great, because I really faced trouble with affirmative action, and I don't want my kids to be disadvantaged against black kids. I just had a baby; I want to put it in his name.
Planned Parenthood: Yes, absolutely.
Actor: And we don't, you know we just think, the less black kids out there the better.
Planned Parenthood: (Laughs) Understandable, understandable.
Actor: Right. I want to protect my son, so he can get into college.
Planned Parenthood: All right. Excuse my hesitation, this is the first time I've had a donor call and make this kind of request, so I'm excited, and want to make sure I don't leave anything out.
Outside of the pro-life movement not that many Americans, specifically African-Americans, are aware that Planned Parenthood was started by Margaret Sanger to eliminate the "negro" race. Margaret Sanger's racism is obvious in this December 10, 1939 letter to fellow eugenics colleague Dr. Clarence J. Gamble: "We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population..." To top it all off, Margaret Sanger was also a guest speaker at a Ku Klux Klan rally in Silver Lake, New Jersey during 1926.
Margaret Sanger's bigotry did not stop with African-Americans, she hated all minorities as well as the disabled: "Our failure to segregate morons who are increasing and multiplying . . . The most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective." Is it no surprise that Margaret Sanger was also the inspiration to a couple of prominent Nazi's that set in motion the eugenics policy of the Third Reich starting with the disabled and then ultimately to the Jews?
Planned Parenthood has a notorious and bigoted past that is still manifesting itself today. It's unfortunate that here in Houston that a local latina politician and avowed "Catholic" Carol Alvarado is a board member of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas. She is doing the dirty work of the devil in propagating the Culture of Death.

Latin Mass At Annunciation Church (Houston, 12:10pm)
I just got word that Msgr. James L. Golasinski will be holding a Latin Mass at Annunciation Church here in Houston in recognition of Pope Benedict's gift to the Catholic Church in his recent motu proprio. The Latin Mass will be at 12:10pm tomorrow, Friday, September 14 at Annunciation Church which is located 1618 Texas Avenue in the heart of downtown Houston.
The Summorum Pontificum is an edict from the Pope in the form of a motu proprio that allows the parish priest to celebrate the preconciliar Latin Mass instead of gaining approval from the local ordinary.
Annunciation Church is part of the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese with Archbishop Daniel DiNardo as its head. Msgr. Golasinski is a pious and steadfast believer in Christ and His Church.

Nuns Without Habits In Houston
Today in the Houston Chronicle's Religion section there were two articles about nuns. What makes this story stick out, like most liberal articles, is that of course they interviewed "new age" nuns.
The reporter asks these nuns, the Dominican Sisters of Houston, "So, do you have to give up everything?"
The Sister responds to this question with "Do we look as if we have given up everything?",
Can I presume they have given up much more? Like contemplation, praying, and suffering in solitude?
The next question coming from the reporter is "Can you ever get married". Which the nuns never reply to but whimsically respond that questions such as these gave them reason to update their website so as to clear any confusion. The title on their website pretty much says it all, "Our habits have changed. But not our mission".
Sister Niehaus continues on by saying, "We sort of discovered that people don't know we are here or don't recognize us,". Is that because you don't look, behave, or lead a nuns life?
Here's another nun's intonation on the need to update their (web)site with emphasis mine:
Sister Hubbard, who spearheaded the project, said the sisters spent more than six months developing the site, which launched earlier this month. When they began discussing ways to update their public image, the Internet seemed the ideal place to start, said Sister Hubbard, a BlackBerry user who uses words like "hard core" and "rockin' with the music."To view their website click here. In the other 'nun' article also aptly titled, "This sister's spiritual journey includes study of cosmos". The Houston Chronicle reporter interviews Sister Linda Gibler who recently earned her doctorate in "philosophy and religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies, with a concentration in philosophy, cosmology and consciousness." Yes, you read that right, "cosmology and consciousness". Oh, the article gets even better, read this very "incisive" selection (emphasis mine):
"I call myself a cosmologist, which basically is the study of the cosmos. But I studied with Brian Swimme, and he calls it 'functional cosmology,' " she said. "It's not only 'Ain't that grand?' but it's also the 'so what' of it."Huh? So what what? Forgive me, but maybe I'm just a neanderthal Catholic with a limited vocabulary, but was anything said at all in that last sentence? Now I wonder why people would get confused with her on this or on here appearance? (emphasis mine):
She smiles when people get confused and think she's a hairstylist. Sister Gibler patiently explains the difference between a cosmetologist and a cosmologist.Maybe not wearing habit could be a clue to the confusion

Cafe Catholica '07: Faith & Politics
This Monday evening, July 16 beginning at 7:30 pm, Cafe Catholica will have as a guest speaker Dave Wallace, the mayor of Sugarland, Texas as well as Barbara J. Elliott. The theme for tomorrow evenings young adult conference is "Faith & Politics" from a Catholic perspective.
Cafe Catholica will begin with a Mass inside the St. Vincent de Paul parish hall at 6:30 pm, followed by dinner (with a nominal donation of $5) at 7:00 pm, then the guest speakers begin at 7:30 pm. St. Vincent de Paul is located on 6800 Buffalo Speedway with Holcombe as the cross street. There is ample parking on both sides of the church.

Cafe Catholica 2007
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is conducting their 8th annual Young Adult Coffee House more popularly known as Cafe Catholica! This is actually a group of fervent and faithful young adult Catholics in their early 20s to 30s who are holding a speaker series directed for Catholic young adults. The speaker series occurs each Monday evening for the rest of July at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church located on 6800 Buffalo Speedway in Houston, Texas.
This is the largest young adult conference in Houston conducted annually. Approximately 400-500 young adults come to celebrate Mass, dine together in fellowship, then listen to guest speakers. This event is entirely free, but a nominal donation would be appreciated ($5 is suggested) to keep this even running for next year.
The theme for this years Cafe Catholica 2007 is "Get Connected". This evenings topic will be "Dating & Relationships" with guest speakers Nick Lopez, Jr. M.A., Connie & David Vuong, and Joe & Cinda Devet. These speakers will talk about their relationships and how their Catholic faith plays out in every day life for them with a question and answer session to follow.
Mass begins at 6:30 pm at St. Vincent de Paul Church followed by dinner at 7:00 pm with the speakers beginning at 7:30 pm. I have attended this event the past three (3) years and it is one where you shouldn't miss. If there is only one event you plan to attend, outside of Mass, this would be the event to attend to. This offers a great networking opportunity for clerics and laity alike to meet others who lead, participate, and engage in their Catholic faith in other apostolates within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
I highly recommend any Catholic young adult in Houston to attend this event. You'll learn more about your faith, be invigorated by fellowship of other Catholics who live out their faith each and every day, and come away wanting to do more as a Catholic living in the world.

Into Great Silence, Now Playing in Houston

That's the words I use to describe this moving film about devout Christians in their journey towards closer union with God. Into Great Silence, a documentary movie of the lives of Carthusian monks in the French Alps monastery of the Grand Charteuse, is a film by Philip Groning.
I've posted twice about this move within the last two years and now it has finally arrived here in the United States. I found out it is playing at the Angelika Film Center in downtown Houston and got a group of friends together to view the film after Mass this past Sunday. Everyone had much more rave(-r) reviews than I had. I don't want to build it up too much, but if you love your faith and want to experience another aspect of Christianity, especially in a contemplative environment, I would strongly suggest you go watch this.
It is playing until Sunday of this week. I spoke with the movie manager at Angelika Film Center and he said that it is their top-grossing film that they have (there are seven other films showing as well) and the likelihood of extending it another week is very good if not strong. So don't procrastinate fellow Houstonians! Go out there and watch it now.
Because I can surely attest that when it comes to DVD, it won't be the same as in viewing it in a large screen theater. Especially the stunning and magnificent views you see of the French Alps surrounding the beautiful monastery during winter and summer!

Jeremiah and Carol Alvarado
609 BC...
...The armies of Babylon were devastating the countryside of Judah. One by one the towns and villages of Judah were falling under the control of the Babylonians. Surely God's chosen people, what was left hiding in Jerusalem, thought that the Lord would protect them regardless of past indiscretions. Even though now the people of Judah were going through the motions of respect for the Lord through rituals and custom, this should have been enough to assuage God Himself to forgive them of their long years of idolatry and infanticide.
Long years of prosperity, territorial pettiness, recession into pantheism, and disregard for the promises of the Covenant handed down to Moses allowed the people of Judah to be of the world instead of God.
The great prophet Jeremiah forewarned the twelve tribes of Israel but to no avail. Finally, with Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar's armies ready to lay siege to the walls of Jerusalem the people of Judah listened to the prophet's Jeremiah words which today we call the Temple Sermon:
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will let you dwell in this place. Do not trust in these deceptive words: `This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.' (Jeremiah 7:3-4)
AD 2006...
...City of Houston Councilwoman Carol Alvarado is the darling of the up and coming 'Hispanic' political community. Many expect her to run for mayor or even state politics. Known for her political savvy and bounce back-ability she claims to be an avowed Catholic who attends Sunday Mass at St. Alphonsus.
"For if you truly amend your ways and your doings, if you truly execute justice one with another, if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own hurt, then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers for ever. (Jeremiah 7:5-7)
Miss Alvarado is a friend of immigration reform and many other politically correct social causes. Yet she is a proud board member of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas. Miss Alvarado, if you are such an avowed Catholic, why then do you participate in the shedding of innocent blood? Our shared Catholic faith specifically states, "You shall not kill." (Exodus 20:13).
What part of "You shall not kill" do you not understand?
Since you don't know much about our Catholic faith, let's revisit the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) on abortion:
2271: Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae, "by the very commission of the offense, and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.
2270: Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.

Miss Alvarado, how Catholic are you now? By the mere fact that you are a board member of Planned Parenthood of Houston and southeast Texas the blood of innocents are on your hands. The death of untold thousands of children stains your conscience. You are contributing to this century’s greatest slaughter of people. The people you explicitly seek to serve.
