Barack Obama's Excuses Speech

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois gave a speech titled “A More Perfect Union” this morning in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where the next major Democratic primary will be held. This speech was given by Mr. Obama due to the unveiling of the hate and bigotry disguised as ‘black liberation theology’ taught by Pastor Jeremiah Wright at Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ in which Mr. Obama has attended for almost 20 years. Mr. Obama attempted to white wash this political liability with this speech. This speech can be summarized by the following: ‘Because Americans are unaware that they can be as racist as Jeremiah Wright, then you to are at fault as I am. So we must look beyond him and yourselves to vote for me to change this country into a social welfare state.’ I’ve broken down highlights of Mr. Obama’s speech with my commentary below and all quotes and words attributed to Mr. Obama in red. Mr. Obama eloquently opened with a review of the founding of this country bringing up the issue of slavery right away. He then briefly explains his ethnic background and how it is woven into the American fabric of this country. Mr. Obama then goes and explains the alleged stereotypes of why he has become the Democratic Party’s frontrunner. Finally he reaches to the real reason he is giving this ‘A More Perfect Union’ speech by bringing up Jeremiah Wright. He then goes downhill from there throwing out one excuse after another. He begins first by throwing his white grandmother under the bus by saying that she too used racial epitaphs thrown at people of color. Mr. Obama then turns around and proclaims that this isn’t an excuse for Jeremiah Wright’s bigotry and hate, but then he doesn’t explain himself why he bothered to mention this fact about his grandmother. Why did Mr. Obama bring this up? Because Mr. Obama is foreshadowing to something later in his speech by painting that non-black Americans are Jeremiah Wrights. Mr. Obama begins to explain Jeremiah Wright’s bigotry because of circumstances that Wright grew up in. This Mr. Obama said well enough to ‘excuse’ Wright’s bigotry and hate. Mr. Obama whitewashes this bigotry and hate by saying: “But the anger is real; it is powerful; and to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races.” Then Mr. Obama takes a swipe at white Americans by painting some of them as hate mongers in the image of Jeremiah Wright’s bigotry. Mr. Obama explains that this came to the surface in 1980 with the election of Ronald Reagan by those resentful of affirmative action and welfare programs; Mr. Obama calls those that voted for Reagan the “Reagan Coalition”. Imagine that, implying those that voted for the greatest president in the 2nd half of the 20th century as bigots. After insulting Americans who voted for Ronald Reagan he then went after conservatives with the following diatribe: “Talk show hosts and conservative commentators built entire careers unmasking bogus claims of racism while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and inequality as mere political correctness or reverse racism.” Again, because some of the misguided thoughts, words, and actions of Jeremiah Wright can be explained away due to his upbringing; non-black Americans can be just as obtuse because of their perceptions that shape their experiences that ultimately ends ‘legitimate discussions of racial injustice and inequality’. Mr. Obama then tries to placate those that he just painted as neo-racists by painting Wright as one of them (conservative) because Wright preached ‘self-help’ to his congregation (in between hate whitey comments I’m sure). Mr. Obama’s speech then segways into European style socialism: by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations. It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare, and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper.” In order to sell the above paragraph Mr. Obama quotes scripture to disguise as something benevolent not realizing that God gave us free will to make our own decisions to help those in need. Mr. Obama does this in order to implement these European style social programs with the following statement: “that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother’s keeper, Scripture tells us.” He ties this statement in with the following: “let our politics reflect that spirit as well.” To have the government make opportunities for you is basically what Mr. Mr. Obama is promoting here. Mr. Obama then lumps Jeremiah Wright with Americans who voted for Ronald Reagan as the politics of division. Basically saying that you Americans are as tainted as he is so give me a pass by looking ‘beyond’ these divisions and vote for me to ‘change’ America into a social welfare state. He finishes his speech in melodramatic fashion asking Americans to form a more perfect union by voting for him in the next Democratic primary of Pennsylvania and ultimately the White House because “that is where perfection begins.” To read his speech in its entirety click here. Loki,

I caught that to, but after I made this posting.

I'm curious to see if the mainstream media will report this. I'm sure talk radio and the bloggers will, but Obama will take a hammering if he gets the nomination because if it is one thing I despise, it is a liar.

Liars I can not stand, this shall not be reported for one reason, and one reason only...Obama can do no wrong, reason why, if anyone dares attack him, they can spin it to say racism.

I have something else interesting for ya. Here is a quote by James Cone that is cited on Rev. Wright's church website. It's pretty scary.
-Karen

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

Karen,

Yeah, I read that when I was researching this bigot.

'Black Liberation Theology' has absolutely ZERO to do with Jesus and Christianity.

Thanks for commenting!

Tito, sorry dude, but Reagan was never the greatest president of this USA. This is a man who claimed to win the election by a mandate. Dude 29% of voters voting does not make a mandate. Check out the stats for yourself. I don't beleive Obama will win because it is showing us how much racism is still very much alive and present in the USA. It is evident at every level of society. To ignore it and pretend that we are ok, is evident of a country that is more interested in reality shows than real life. I could not believe the stuff you write about here on this supposedly catholic blog. Sorry dude the problem belongs to everyone. If we are going to point fingers lets start with it pointing to ourselves. Later dude.

Anon,

Thanks dude. All comments are appreciated.

Racism is a sin.

In the case of this blog, so is illiteracy.

What is eminently clear is the degree to which the Black church is still largely misunderstood and routinely caricatured in U.S. popular culture. And so, for nearly three weeks, we have talked around the issue but have not addressed it in a substantive manner. We now realize why the 11 o'clock hour on Sunday is the most segregated hour of the week.

It is a tradition we celebrate and for which we do not apologize. This bold witness is not new, and its ability to connect divine justice with social justice has shaped many of the best and pride producing developments in U.S. life. It is this tradition that helped to end slavery, defeat segregation, and ensure voting rights for all citizens. This prophetic tradition is centuries old and forcefully represented by leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr., who sparked the imagination and safeguarded the moral commitments of the country.

Although King was often persecuted in his lifetime, few would challenge his patriotism today. Hence, brief sound bites from his "I Have A Dream" speech are played over and over again and are etched in the public's memory.

Yet, Dr. King, who loved the United States, also had harsh words for his beloved nation. In the light of the controversy surrounding Dr. Wright's sharp critique of U.S. foreign policy, we would remind the nation that it was Dr. King who called the United States of America "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today." It was Dr. King who said "the judgment of God is on America." And, it was Dr. King who, because he was killed on Thursday, April 4, 1968, never got to preach a sermon on which he was working for that Sunday, entitled, "Why America May Go to Hell."

True patriots and true prophets are often called to speak harsh words to their nation -- not out of a place of hatred, as some suggest, but from an impassioned place of profound love and the highest of expectations.
