Benefit Event Open to Public Will Honor Holy Man of God Matthew A. Coles

Event will be held tonight at Mario’s Restaurant in Webster, Texas on December 21, 2010

The friends and family of Matthew A. Coles would like to share with the public an inspiring story of hope, gratitude and miraculous healing and to invite the public to a special benefit event to be held at Mario’s Restaurant in Webster, Texas on the evening of this Tuesday, December 21, 2010.

Matthew and his wife Lucy met and fell in love at Texas A&M University where they were active members of St. Mary’s Catholic Student Center. They became engaged in the spring of 2005 and moved to Washington, D.C. so Matthew could pursue a Ph.L. in Philosophy at the Catholic University of America. He hoped to work as a philosophy professor to support his dream of having a large family with his soon-to-be wife.  In June 2006, only three weeks before he and Lucy were married, Matthew was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and told he had 6 months to live. At age 23, Matthew had never smoked cigarettes and had no family history of lung cancer. The origin of the cancer was a mystery.

After spending another two years in Washington, D.C. continuing his studies and undergoing extensive chemical treatments with little medicinal progress, Matthew and Lucy returned to Houston to be closer to their families and pursue the full healing of his body under the wisdom of the Lord and with the guidance of a natural nutritional program developed by the late Dr. Max Gerson. During that time Matthew and Lucy served as Directors of High School Youth Ministry for Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church and continued to touch many lives, young and old, with their witness of gratitude and hope.  Despite warnings from physicians of infertility because of the methods that would be utilized in the early stages of the cancer treatment and despite the recommendation of physicians that the couple use artificial means to conceive children, Matthew and Lucy were blessed with the gift of three boys naturally conceived. John-Matthew, who was conceived during chemotherapy, is 3 years old, Pio is 18 months old, and Andrew Damien was born on Thanksgiving Day 2010.  A week and a half later, on the evening of December 5, 2010, four and half years after the initial diagnosis, Matt won his battle with cancer and passed into eternal life.

Matthew was a son, brother, husband, father, and true Catholic renaissance man, whether he was uploading to his music player with lectures in French from his favorite philosopher, juggling for youth, making crêpes for his wife, building a toboggan for friends, or training his boys in the art of chivalry and hospitality.  He had wisdom to share but often spent his time listening rather than speaking. In the face of a terminal diagnosis, Matthew lived in a profound state of peace despite great suffering and uncertainty, often comforting those who came to comfort him. Anyone who knew Matthew recognized the profound joy with which he lived his life.  The joy of the Lord was his strength. This enabled Matthew to live a humble life of beatitude and simplicity by which one could not help but notice and be moved.

Below is a prayer Matthew wrote about a year and half ago:

“Vivre d’Amour” (To live in Love)

To live your life, oh Christ – here and now, and with my whole being. To give every one of my days to You, and with each of my actions to live in Your Presence. To put others before myself – and to give myself for them. To focus on taking care of myself only insofar as it is an act of love towards You, Lord and towards others – especially Lucy and our family. To love without measure and without fear. To be misunderstood by this world, and to love You all the more!

We invite the public to a benefit event to be held for the Coles Family on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Mario’s Restaurant located at 618 W Nasa Parkway, Webster, Texas. For more information about Matthew Coles and the benefit event, please contact Nick Gardener at (713) 816-8790. To RSVP to the benefit event, please email Erin Corsaro at erincorsaro@att.net.

Come and meet the family and friends of this holy man of God!

Wikileaks: US Never Expected Ratzinger Elected as Pope

[Updated with new video and additional commentary]

Wikileaks information has been disclosed by Rome Reports that the U.S. intelligence services were completely caught off guard and surprised at the election of then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI.

U.S. intelligence was expecting a Latin American as the next pope, and predicted that then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger would have lost in the first round voting.

The rest from Father Zuhlsdorf:

Before the election the staff of the US embassy to the Holy See sent speculations to Washington about the one to be elected.

“The first factor will be age, the cardinals will seek someone who is neither too young nor too old, because they don’t want to have another funeral and conclave quickly” but “they also want to avoid having a long pontificate like that of John Paul II.”  Furthermore, “it will be a person in reasonably good health”.  Another element will be “linguistic ability” and he will have to know Italian.

The Pulpit, the Catholic Blogosphere's Newest Catholic Newsite

This is my newest creation and contribution to the Catholic blogosphere, a news aggregate site that combs the Internet for the best Catholic punditry around the world.

I hope the faithful readers of CVSTOS FIDEI surf over there and take a gander of what we, The Pulpit, have to offer.  We differentiate ourselves from other news aggregaters in which we display articles written from such authors as Father Zuhlsdorf to Mark Shea and from George Weigel to Ross Douthat and everything else in-between.  Hopefully providing for you the most insightful and well written articles that affect us as Catholics.

If you like what you see, subscribe to the feed or tell your friends in an email!

Again, here is the website: http://thepulp.it/

Enjoy!

John Allen is Wrong

John L. Allen Jr., otherwise referred to in most circles as John Allen, is the prolific writer for the dissident Catholic newspaper National Catholic Reporter has come out defending L'Osservatore Romano in the recent Pope Condom Comments controversy.

John Allen laid the blame clearly on orthodox/conservative Catholic bloggers for "jealousy, politics, and dated expectations of how the Vatican paper ought to behave." referring to critics of L'Osservatore Romano and its editor Gian Maria Vian, of which I am one of those critics.

Mr. Allen, by "dated expectations of how the Vatican paper ought to behave", do you mean as in defending Church teaching and not embarrassing the pope at all costs?

Are you kidding me?

No, really, are you kidding me Mr. John "anyone who practices their Catholic faith is equivalent to the Taliban" Allen?

Mr. Allen's credibility has always been held in high esteem by both sides of the Catholic aisle, ie, orthodox and dissident Catholics.  After reading his book on Opus Dei, I came away impressed by his even handedness.

But with the recent AP article referencing John Allen's "Taliban Catholicism" comment in which Mr. Allen paints all practicing Catholics as the Taliban and now his defense of L'Osservatore Romano's major league gaffe in which mass swaths of humanity now think that Catholic teaching on contraception has changed, he has the appalling gall to smear orthodox/conservative Catholic bloggers?

Maybe it's time to question John Allen's journalistic credentials as a balanced journalist with this latest travail in journalistic adventurism.

This just befuddles the mind.

Custos Fidei's New Look... Again!

The changes that I have made over the years to Custos Fidei have mostly come without warning, but at least they were gradual changes, nothing sudden.  Changing the header and tweaking sidebars here and there are some of the changes that I have implemented.

Since I have upgraded the The American Catholic website and created two new websites, Gulf Coast Catholic and The Pulpit, I have decided to upgrade Custos Fidei as well.  I won't get a URL, but I will mess around with the programming and see what I can do to make it more user friendly.

If any of my loyal readers have any idea, suggestion, and or requests, now is the time to speak your peace.

Just as a friendly reminder since we are on the topic of websites, if you miss your twice daily Catholic news updates here at Custos Fidei, I haven't stopped them, I've just created a brand new website just for them at The Pulpit.

Custos Fidei Exclusive: Sneak Peak at New Website

As I promised to my loyal readers I am unveiling the name of a new website that combines the best of RealClearPolitics and the Drudge Report with a Catholic focus of course!

The name of this new website is The Pulpit.

I was going to wait to make it go online after Thanksgiving, I've decided that as soon as I'm done with a few more tweaks it'll go online by the end of this week.

I dare my readers to search for it online and see if they can locate the URL and post it in the comments section.

The first reader who does this gets bragging rights to being the First Reader of The Pulpit (sorry, I'm poor!).

Good luck and God bless!

In Jesus, Mary, & Joseph,

Tito

Gulf Coast Catholic Is Here!

A blogsite dedicated to all things Catholic in Houston has gone live this week!  A group of writers got together over a year ago and have been working and planning together to get this site up and running.  I am their Chief Editor and we will be writing on activities, events, apostolates, and other things Catholic that are occurring in the great Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

We hope you all take a look at it give us some feedback.  The name of this endeavor is Gulf Coast Catholic.

We will be serving the laity and clergy of the Gulf Coast region in establishing a strong, vibrant, and orthodox fellowship of disciples of Christ!

I Am Back And Some Random Thoughts on John Allen And Halloween For Houston's Young Adult Catholics

Thank you all for your prayers, they are sincerely appreciated.

Just a quick take on the recent AP article about the Catholic blogosphere and the characterization of "conservative" Catholics as Taliban Catholics.

I lay the blame for that epithet squarely on John Allen's shoulders.  He should have known better than to say that, in whatever context he was using it in.

Mr. Allen needs to apologize, not clarify, for his comments.

I see an underlining hostility to anything approaching orthodoxy in the Catholic faith in his writings, which is sad considering how well he writes separating his personal feelings from the subjects he writes about... mostly.

I've just finished viewing some of my friends pics from their Halloween parties and for the most part I am disappointed with a couple of the photos.  Blaspheming priests and nuns are not what it means to be Catholics and wearing scant clothing to raise an eyebrow or two is simply out of the realm of "engaging the secular culture".

Which is why I lead a couple of young adult apostolates to change the culture around me.  Providing safe haven for Catholics that like to have fun without compromising their faith.  I will begin another apostolate which will take this one step further, into the Internet.

Yes, November will provide for more than one new Catholic website to be launched.

It will be a November to Remember.

By the grace of God we will strike back at the Culture of Death and bring a Culture of Life and Love!

Break

Dear loyal readers,

I am requesting your prayers for my upcoming wedding, which of course means I will not be posting anything until I return from all activities.

Once I return on November 1, this personal blog, Custos Fidei, will revert to a personal blog of my musings on the Catholic faith.

The links of commentary and analysis will be moved to a new Catholic website which will launch on November 28 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) or earlier.  It will be a dedicated website to posting the best commentary, opinion, and analysis in the Catholic web.

It will be very well made, spiffy, and professional looking.

What you've seen these past three weeks, twice daily posts during the weekdays and one daily post on the weekends, here on Custos Fidei will be done on this new website.  Included will probably be a daily Catholic television news update, a truncated version of the best Catholic aggregater news links, and a daily top-ten of the most popular posts on the web.

Imagine the Drudge Report combined with RealClearPolitics but exponentially improved in serving you the best in the Catholic web.  No tiny type and no quick hits, only well written, in-depth analysis of the currents in the Catholic Church as well as everything else related to the Bride of Christ.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please post them here and tell me what you liked or didn't like or want to see or not see.

The name of this new website will be posted here first to my loyal readers.  The URL has already been purchased and the logo is nearing completion.  The basic layout of the website has been set and is currently being programmed now (which I'm about a third of the way through).

In Jesus, Mary, & Joseph,

Tito

Changes Coming

Changes are coming as I've been saying for several months to this blog and more.

Thank you for your patience and loyalty.

The first change is that there will be a new website that I am designing, developing, and will soon go online.  It will be very similar to Custos Fidei in it's daily news-of-the-day postings.  The difference being that they will be daily, not the infrequency that they are here at Custos Fidei.

What I've been doing here at Custos the past couple of years or so is experimenting on what I want to do with this new website.

The new website will be done from scratch and have a new name.

Custos Fidei will revert to being a personal blog of mine where I post from time to time my thoughts on everything (from a Catholic perspective).

Back to this new website.  I will reveal the name and Go-Live date hopefully within a few weeks (or days).

Please help me in this endeavor by spreading the word about.

In the meantime, enjoy the last few days of my aggregate news summaries!

In Jesus, Mary, & Joseph,

Tito
