Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?

It's a question that many people ask during trying times. Many times the question is asked scornfully from the secular media to Christian leaders and followers alike. I tend to believe that those who strive to live a Christian life are attacked by the devil and his demons to try and make the Christian deviate from the straight and narrow path. I believe this to some extent because one wonders why those that aren't very Christian tend to be living the easy life. Probably because why would the devil bother with such people if they are already in sin and living worldly lives. Of course we shouldn't worry about this since Heaven is the ultimate destination. But still we do seek comfort from Him in difficult situations. My friend and I had this same discussion this past weekend and he shared with me Psalm 73[72]. A Psalm of Asaph. 1 Truly God is good to the upright, to those who are pure in heart. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had well nigh slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4 For they have no pangs; their bodies are sound and sleek. 5 They are not in trouble as other men are; they are not stricken like other men. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. 7 Their eyes swell out with fatness, their hearts overflow with follies. 8 They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. 9 They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. 10 Therefore the people turn and praise them; and find no fault in them. 11 And they say, "How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?" 12 Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. 13 All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. 14 For all the day long I have been stricken, and chastened every morning. 15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have been untrue to the generation of thy children. 16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, 17 until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I perceived their end. 18 Truly thou dost set them in slippery places; thou dost make them fall to ruin. 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! 20 They are like a dream when one awakes, on awaking you despise their phantoms. 21 When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, 22 I was stupid and ignorant, I was like a beast toward thee. 23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee; thou dost hold my right hand. 24 Thou dost guide me with thy counsel, and afterward thou wilt receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is nothing upon earth that I desire besides thee. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. 27 For lo, those who are far from thee shall perish; thou dost put an end to those who are false to thee. 28 But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all thy works. Amen.

Abortion and Religion

For those of you involved in the Pro-Life movement (or the Pro-Choice faction for that matter) the following excerpt should help to put things in a better spiritual perspective. This excerpt was taken from Fr. Thomas Euteneuer upcoming book entitled, "Pro-Life and Exorcism". Emphasis mine, commentary mine.
The spiritual dimension of this grisly "business" is its systematizing of ritual blood sacrifice to the god of child murder, Moloch, who we know of from the severe condemnations of him in the Old Testament (Lev 18:21, 20:2-5, 1 Kings 11:5.33, 2 Kings 23:13 and Zephaniah 1:5). This demon of murder appears in many forms and cultures through history (Phoenician, Carthaginian, Canaanite, Celt, Indian, Aztec and others) but is always the same bloodthirsty beast that demands the killing of children as his form of worship. This demon is not content with a single act of murder here and there. His insatiable appetite for the death of innocents seeks public endorsement to justify his gruesome deeds, and he needs a systematic expression of it to increase his worship. The modern abortion industry offers ritual blood sacrifice to the ancient abortion demon. It is in every way a demonic religion. It has its sacred dogma ("choice"), its ruling hierarchy (Planned Parenthood), its theologians (feminist ideologues), its sacrificing priesthood (abortionists), its temples (abortion mills or abortuories), altars (surgical tables), ritual victims (primarily babies and secondarily women), acolytes and sacristans (clinic workers and death-scorts/deathscorts), congregations (all supporters of abortion) and its own unifying principle of sacramental "grace" (money). In short, the abortion industry is a perfect demonic system which offers a perverse form of worship to the devil. The sacrificial victim in this demonic religion is not a brute animal as was offered to the Old Testament God of Israel in a legitimate system of religious sacrifices. In abortion, the victim is an innocent human being who is made in the "image and likeness of God" and who can never defend herself. This combination of innocence, parental participation and ritualized obliteration of the visage of God in human form is the devil's way of blaspheming the Father with the misguided participation of God's own children. The systematic destruction of the human body which St. Paul calls "the temple of the Holy Spirit" is a blasphemous insult to God. If the abortion business is not truly demonic, nothing is. From this perspective, the need for a deeply spiritual approach to ending the abortion holocaust is fundamental. It does not absolve us from working in every way humanly possible to end abortion, but it puts all our human activity into the right perspective. In this month of the Precious Blood we must cover every abortionist, abortion mill and client of the abortion industry with Christ's Blood in order to conquer the blood sacrifice of the devil with the greatest force of good known to man. If His Blood is properly applied over time with great love, we will see conversions from even the most devoted advocates of abortion. The Blood of Christ is a strong shield for all who pray and work for life and reminds us that our pro-life work brings us to Calvary to stand in solidarity with the unborn child who is unjustly deprived of life.
So here's a quick summary: 1. It has its sacred dogma ("choice") 2. Its ruling hierarchy (Planned Parenthood) 3. Its theologians (feminist ideologues) 4. Its sacrificing priesthood (abortionists) 5. Its temples (abortion mills or abortuories) 6. Altars (surgical tables) 7. Ritual victims (primarily babies and secondarily women) 8. Acolytes and sacristans (clinic workers and death-escorts/deathscorts) 9. Congregations (all supporters of abortion) 10. Its own unifying principle of sacramental "grace" (money). St. Theresa Church in Kekaha, Hawaii

Saint Theresa Church is located in Kekaha on the Garden Island, Kauai. The original St. Theresa Church was blessed in January 1941. It burned down in 1977 and a new church was built on the original sight and blessed in 1979. The church was staffed by Marist priests from 1944-1985 when LaSalette priests took over. The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, have worked at St. Theresa School since coming to Hawaii in 1946, when the school began. Hurricane Iniki destroyed the original school, as well as, the rectory, convent, and church hall. The church needed a new roof and other repairs. (mostly Wikipedia). What you see below is the corner view of the front entrance of St. Theresa Church. The beach is in front of the church. This next picture below was taken directly in front of the church with the welcome sign. This is the westernmost Catholic church in the United States. (also the westernmost Catholic school in the United States) This picture below was taken from inside the front entrance facing the altar. The next picture below was taken directly in front of the altar with the view of the Tabernacle. Again, this picture below was taken in front of the altar but with the view of the interior ceiling. Now we finally get to see the interior view of the front entrance. You can't quite see the beach and the Pacific ocean, but it's there in the background. I need a better camera than the Wal-Mart special next time. OK, we have the exterior view of the back of the church. That's a power line that you see crossing the middle of the picture. I did my best to get it out of the picture as possible. To the left is the church hall and cafeteria which you can't see completely. The parking lot isn't paved by the way. And yes, Kekaha is located in what we locals call the 'dry' side of the island. So that is barely green grass that you see. Below is an excellent side shot of the church taken from the school campus. To the right is the front of the church. Notice the Pacific ocean and my white rental. To the left is the backside of the church. Near the back you see the girls and boys restrooms and to the extreme left you see the edge of the newly built school. St. Theresa School, my alma mater, is what you see below. The picture was taken from the corner of St. Theresa Church. This was not here when I graduated back in 1984. That is the mountain range behind the school to the extreme right of the pic. Take notice of the tree to the left. It'll you give you a perspective for the next picture. Here is the tree I mentioned in the previous paragraph. I took the picture with the school to my back and the playground in the foreground. The Pacific ocean is in the background. Where you see the playground is where the original school was. Imagine attending this school with the windows open. Your sitting at your desk and you have a clear view of the beach which is only approximately 20 yards away. Boy I had NO idea how lucky I was back then. This next picture below gives you the view of the church and the school from 'Inters' & Kekaha Beach. You can barely see the school to the left. Notice the huge smoke stack in the left-center of the pic, I'll have photos of the local sugar mill further down in this posting. Also, if you look hard enough, again in the lower left hand corner of the pic, you'll notice huge lava rocks. They were placed there after Hurricane Iwa (pronounced 'ee-va'). I kind of blogged about that experience here. One last picture of my alma mater. This one below shows an old banner hanging on the school fence. Again, notice the smoke stack to the right of the pic. When the US stopped the special exemption to sugar mills in Hawaii, the sugar industry slowly went into permanent hibernation. Today tourism has supplanted sugar as the main engine of Hawaii's economy. Below are three pics from my hometown of Kekaha. Any vegetation that you see wasn't there before when this was an active mill. Depending on the time of the year, I remember the mills burning the sugar cane fields and the wind would pick up the amber's from the cane and it would fall like snow! Except that it was black snow. If I was any smarter back when I was a keiki, I would have taken pics of that occurrence. Notice the smoke stack below that I mentioned earlier. The mill itself is not working anymore and it's pretty cool to see what you can as you walk around the mill itself. Here is another shot of the mill. This is a bit to the right of what you saw above. Below you can see the huge cranes used to pull the burnt sugar cane into the crushing facilities. It was a distinct but sweet smell that would constantly emanate from the mill. All the vegetation that you see here is overgrowth due to disuse. This last pic below gives you a nice view of the crushing machinery used to crush sugar cane. It's hard to explain, but your looking at it. On the other side you (which I didn't take a pic of) you would be able to have seen the sugar cane being crushed. These next two pics are gratuitous shots of buildings of my high school of the neighboring town of Waimea. Here below is the state of the art athletic complex for Waimea High School Menehunes, the home of Champions! Utu Mai! Below is a picture of the main portion of Waimea High Schools campus. In the foreground is the administrative building. You can see bleachers to the right where we would sit for school rally's. Next year for my, *ahem*, 20 year high school reunion, I'll take more pics.
Yes I miss my home island very much, but most especially my nephew and friends on Kauai. I'll blog more about that later. In the meantime, for a virtual tour of the Kekaha Sugar Mill click here. For more about my high school, Waimea High, click here. Finally, for a humorous, yet accurate description of Kekaha (and Waimea) please click here. Danes Sorry for Looting and Pillaging

The Danes are sorry for looting and pillaging the Irish back when they were known as Vikings. This article by the Sydney Morning Herald says:
MORE than 1200 years ago hordes of bloodthirsty Viking raiders descended on Ireland, pillaging monasteries and massacring the inhabitants. On Wednesday, one of their more mild-mannered descendants stepped ashore to apologise. The Danish Minister for Culture, Brian Mikkelson, who was in Dublin to celebrate the arrival of a replica Norse longboat, apologised for the invasion and destruction inflicted. "In Denmark we are certainly proud of this ship but we are not proud of the damage to the people of Ireland that followed in the footsteps of the Vikings," Mr Mikkelson declared in his welcoming speech delivered by the River Liffey.
Nice. The Anglo-Saxon St. Willibrord followed by the Frankish St. Ansgar (Ansgarius) arrived in Denmark in 725 A.D. and began the slow process of Christianizing my warlike Norman ancestors. I for one am very thankful that my ancestors, those that arrived with King Rollo and later led by William the Conqueror, were converted to Christianity. Now on my mother's side my family is still awaiting an apology from the government of Saudi Arabia for invading, colonizing, and enslaving my Visigothic ancestors for 700+ years in the Iberian peninsula. Thank goodness, through the intercession of Santiago, that the Catholic monarchs and the Reconquista were able to free my mother's family from the bondage of Islam. ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

St. George Church in Waimanalo, Hawaii

A couple of months back I returned to my home state of Hawaii to attend an old friends wedding on Kauai where we both grew up on. Before arriving to Kauai I stayed over on Oahu and stayed with some old friends in Waimanalo earlier in the week. During they day while my friends went to work I would attend the daily Mass at 7:00 am celebrated by Father Alfred "Al" Rebuldela. Ironically this is the same priest back on Kauai at St. Catherine's in Kapa'a that was preparing my friends for their wedding! I didn't know this until after the wedding Mass at St. Catherine's. Nonetheless, here are a few photos of this wonderful little church on the Ko'olau side of Oahu. This first picture is the front entrance of St. George Church in Waimanalo, Hawaii.

This picture here is the inside of the church. I'm standing in the middle of the aisle facing the altar (after Mass of course).

The next two pictures are to the left of the altar and to the right of the altar.

Here you can see Fr. Rebuldela cleaning up the church with his back facing me. Notice the sunshine streaming in from in the background, it's almost 8:00 am. That means it time for me to hit the beach!

Now I'm still standing in the middle of the aisle, but here I turn around and take a picture of the front entrance of the church from the inside.

Now this picture is to give you a perspective of where the Marian and St. George shrines (statues) are at the front of the exterior of the church . To the far left you can barely see the Mother of God with a lei on her. And to the far right you can see the statue of St. George a bit better. The two pictures following this one are upclose shots of both of them.

Here we see Mary with a lei on her.

Here is St. George the dragon slayer! The picture following this one was taken at the righthandside of this picture facing the side of the church.

Ok, facing St. George if you were to walk to the right of the statue you would see the side of the church below. Notice the plumerias on the ground, they're used to make leis in Hawaii.

And lastly this is a sharp corner angle of St. George Church in Waimanalo. You can barely see the statue of St. George in the middle of the picture. The banana colored car you see there is my rental vehicle. That's what I use to get around Oahu when not using my canoe.

I apologize for the delay in posting these pics. I hope to post pics of St. Theresa's Church in Kekaha, Hawaii. Where I grew up and call my hometown. For now here's the link for St. George Church in Waimanalo here. To learn more about being a Catholic in Hawaii go visit Esther's blog at A Catholic Mom in Hawaii.
